Your Role

The Senior Communications Manager will formulate and execute strategic communications plans and messaging related to the Council’s legal, policy and research work. The Senior Communications Manager reports to the Communications Director and works in close collaboration with legal, policy, and research teams, as well as other staff. The work requires careful analysis, planning, creativity, passion, leadership, and cooperation.

The responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Strategic Communications: Develop communications strategies for the Council’s legal, policy and research work in collaboration with other staff. Develop messaging around our legal cases and research products and design plans that include traditional and new media strategies.
  • Media Relations: Coordinate the Council’s media relations for selected major cases and for the policy and research departments.  This work includes writing press releases, pitching stories to media, responding to media inquiries, and coordinating occasional telephonic press conferences.
  • Publications: Review and edit content for Council publications, including blog posts, policy reports, marketing materials and other advocacy materials. Review design of these materials. Collaborate with the Digital Communications Manager on strategies for effective use of the website and of social media.
  • Other:  Will have active management responsibilities and be part of a collaborative communications, marketing, and development team. Help maintain a positive, respectful, welcoming, and professional work environment for employees and partners.

To perform successfully in this role, incumbent should possess skills identified below:

  • Experience with media outreach, devising pitches and cultivating media relationships.
  • Experience with use of websites and social media as communications tools.
  • Strong analytical skills for developing messaging and evaluating and implementing media strategies.
  • Outstanding writing skills and experience presenting complex immigration issues to the public.
  • Management, organization, and planning skills that allow for successful pursuit of numerous concurrent projects.
  • Flexibility to adjust to fast-developing issues and changing circumstances and a can-do attitude toward challenges.
  • Strong understanding of and commitment to immigrants’ rights.

Your Background

BA/BS required and five to seven years of high-level experience in communications, political advocacy, and/or public policy work, including significant writing and communications responsibilities.
